Swinging Bridge House
At the peak of a downslope above the Swinging Bridge Reservoir in Bethel, New York, a proud lake house perches atop a hill—a climactic landmark on the sprawling surrounding landscape of trees and water. The Swinging Bridge House features a dramatic, 45-degree pitched roof, and cuts a diagonal line along the lush woodland foliage and skyline.
The exterior facade of the house makes a pale and minimalist geometric silhouette, accentuated by thick woods to the west. Terraced stairs and a leveled deck extend the property into the land, allowing for seamless movement between interior and exterior spaces. On the first and second floors, angular recessed spaces create nook-like outdoor decks as extensions of the living spaces, ensuring privacy from other guests without compromising sweeping views of the reservoir below.
Inside the house, the layout is designed to optimize fluidity between the living, dining, and kitchen areas, and exterior spaces. The seamless outdoor deck stretches the interior space into the landscape to enhance the experience of the reservoir views. Two recessed outdoor rooms provide private spaces, seamlessly blending with the bedroom areas.
The exterior facade of the house is a minimalist white shape accentuated by woods, and framed by clean lines and geometric shapes.
