56th Street Penthouse
Nestled on West 56th Street in Manhattan, this 500-square-foot penthouse apartment boasts a mesmerizing view of the iconic Hearst Tower. Its design essence hinges on preserving unobstructed sightlines, forging an uninterrupted link from the entry to the expansive window wall framing the Hearst Tower.
Using a distinctive wedge shape to balance the art of openness and pointedness gave spatial definition and created an engaging visual canvas for the apartment. Essential functional zones, including a modern kitchen, sleek bathroom, and comfortable sleeping quarters, sit to the east, optimizing the apartment's layout. Storage finds its discreet place within a narrower section to the west.
Elegantly fashioned from whitewashed Baltic birch plywood, the bedroom, bathroom, and storage zones maintain a timeless, clean aesthetic. The flooring, refinished with a white stain, seamlessly integrates with the cabinetry, accentuating the window frames as the sole black elements in this tastefully designed space. This clever interplay, reminiscent of peering through a stylish pair of eyeglasses, imparts a distinct and visually compelling dimension to this upscale Manhattan penthouse.
The design intent was to maintain open sight lines from entry to the window wall facing the Hearst tower.
The bedroom, bathroom, and storage zones are cut to the wedge space and constructed from simple whitewashed baltic birch plywood.
